I’ve always thought it was uncomfortable when celebrities were analyzed and diagnosed by doctors they’ve never met. Everytime Dr. Drew showed up on CNN calling Angelina Joliemalnourished” or talking about Lindsay Lohan‘s “disease,” I questioned the morality of sharing a medical opinion about a person that you’ve never treated.

4 Things To Expect from Dr. Drew's New Show

Dr. Drew, the doctor-turned-TV-star who has hosted Loveline, Celebrity Rehab, and the Teen Mom reunions, is getting his own show on HLN. Although his previous forays into television have relied on his medical expertise – Drew, whose workaday last name is Pinsky, is an addiction and recovery specialist – this one will be a more general news and current events discussion program a la the network’s shows with Larry King and Joy Behar. Dr. Drew, You and I Are So Over

For a long time, I was a big Dr. Drew fan. I watched Loveline and learned quite a bit about sexuality from his careful, openminded explanations. But the more famous Dr. Drew got, the more uneasy I felt. On Celebrity Rehab, he skirted the line of appropriateness several times, whether it was agreeing to televise therapy sessions (yes, they do have educational value, but they felt invasive), letting rehab patients get away with behavior that would have gotten them kicked out of any other facility (sneaking in guests, doing drugs, getting in fights), and barely concealing his crush on model Amber Smith. During the seasons of Celebrity Rehab and its sibling show Sex Rehab, I still managed to convince myself that Dr. Drew was still a good, well-intentioned guy despite all the ridiculousness.
