After a couple months of speculation, Kate Moss has finally been confirmed for the January/February cover of Playboy–which just so happens to be the 60th anniversary issue.
Why this is a big deal, we’re not entirely sure–Moss has done more nude shoots than just about any model of her profile we can think of and, moreover, plenty of other fashion models have gotten naked for Hugh Hefner‘s equally beloved and reviled lad mag. Let’s take a look!
Ed. Note: The list is obviously not safe for work, because it includes covers of foreign editions of the magazine, which have a devil-may-care attitude about visible breasts. Also, the final entry is disturbing (but censored). More
Here at The Gloss, we love catching fashion magazines in their stubborn reliance on old clichĂ©. Whether it’s cartoonish carb-loading or yet another faux-provocative editorial featuring sexy nuns or still more grocery store spreads or just, uh, racism–apparently there’s a painfully small number of ideas in the world.
V Magazine’s latest issue features an editorial called The Discreet Charm of Kate Upton–shot by Sebastian Faena, it’s ostensibly an homage to Buñuel, but it’s also yet another fashion spread preoccupied with a bored, beautiful woman in designer clothes. Upton’s character appears to be having an affair (though she never sets down her Marc Jacobs bag)–while her many, many precursors are stuck with less glamorous household chores. But all of them are dressed to the nines!

In 1989, Claudia Schiffer starred in the Guess campaign. One image, that of Schiffer in a bustier taken by the great Ellen von Unwerth, remains one of the most iconic pieces of fashion advertising in history. Now, to celebrate 30 years of Guess, the company has hired Claudia again and (surprise!) she still looks like a ridiculously beautiful supermodel. More
Did you know that Duran Duran is still around, and furthermore, that they’re still releasing albums? It’s true! They’re also still making expensive, model-filled music videos, only now they’re getting really meta about it. More
For its December issue, Harper’s Bazaar UK had five of the “original supermodels” (Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Eva Herzigova, Helena Christensen, and Yasmin Le Bon) dress up to look like the band Duran Duran for what was most likely a very expensive editorial. The only problem? They look more like a generic rock band than any era of that legendary synth pop group. I’ve included a few photos of the band for comparison; see if you agree. More
Fashion industry luminaries descended upon Natalia Vodianova’s White Fairy Tale Love Ball. Vodianova’s event called for “white or silver” gowns, which Daphne Guinness seemed to ignore. Check out all the opulent couture on supermodels (Stella! Mariacarla! Eva!), actresses (Anne!), designers (Valentino!) and editors alike. And Olivia Palermo. More
Last November, we pointed out that it’s weird when teenagers become supermodels. We were subsequently inspired to put together a list of 13 working models over the age of 30, from Karen Elson to Kristen McMenamy. Back then, the criteria was they had to have walked in a show, fronted a campaign or starred in an editorial for a major glossy within the last year. At the time, we endeavored to “ignore the more obvious still-working over-30 ladies (Naomi Campbell, Gisele Bundchen, Kate Moss) and instead showcase lower-profile but no less amazing women.” That’s still the case.
