There must be something in the water: first American Apparel introduces the world to Jacky–a lovely and photogenic lady who is neither a teenager nor a model–and now we learn Lanvin‘s Fall 2012 campaign will also star a whole bunch of non-model civilians. More
Zooey Deschanel, what hath thou wrought?
Okay, so Zooey generally looks fairly put-together. But the quirksome, infantilized woman-children she so often plays seem to have leaked into mainstream culture to the point where major fashion brands like Madewell are styling their models like they’re trying out for Charlize Theron‘s role on Arrested Development. I’m all for dressing whimsically, but there’s a difference between selecting a cutesy print and making people wonder if you’re developmentally disabled and/or engaged in some sort of adult baby fetish play. Hunger Games premiered in LA last night and star Jennifer Lawrence opted for a gold lame Fall 2012 Prabal Gurung gown and strappy Jimmy Choos. The unusual dress features black tulle inserts at the shoulders and nudes ones at the waist, hitting popular trends metallic, cut-out and sheer in one fell swoop. More
Vivienne Westwood showed her Fall 2012 collection in Paris on Saturday and Look 31 has the fashion press very curious: what do you call this thing? It’s not quite leggings, not quite a cardigan, with maybe a little romper and some tights thrown in? And pajamas? More

You’ve probably noticed a proliferation of yeti arms in recent seasons… and, if the Fall 2012 runways are to be believed, they show no signs of slowing. However, one thing we noticed at the NYFW shows was the enormous variety of sleeves. Obviously, they’re going to be a staple for Fall (it’s chilly, after all) but they won’t be your garden variety arm covering: designers like Thakoon, Peter Som, and Rodarte showed unexpected proportions… while known minimalists like Nariso Rodriguez played around with surprising volume. Since bringing you proof of the bonafide trend post-NYFW, I realized that if designers like Doo.Ri, Cynthia Rowley, and Cushnie et Ochs are getting all up in that leather, then maybe I can pull it off too. Here are my reasons to start loving the leather dress.

“Beauty at Burberry Prorsum was all about recreating an unassumingly sexy and ‘worn’ look,” reports WWD from yesterday’s Burberry show at London Fashion Week. Makeup artist Wendy Rowe created the look using eye colors from Burberry’s beauty collection (natch), which she described as something for “a girl who has been out and about in the city and then she is going to the countryside.” More
Fashion Week happened, as you know, and now we begin the pick-up part of the season, where we root through the collections and decipher trends in color, texture, print, silhouette, etc. One Fall-appropriate hit: leather, especially dresses. They were tight and sexy at Cushnie et Ochs, cool and voluminous at Cynthia Rowley and surprisingly ladylike at Rachel Comey. They cropped up at Peter Som, Thakoon, even Marc Jacobs did a few.
A leather dress will go great with the rest of your urban warrior costume but… aren’t they still really sweaty? And they bunch in such unflattering ways! And it’s hard to pull off a heavy texture like that. Here’s a few of the different styles we saw at NYFW, let us know if you’ll be headed that direction next Fall.
