We all know fashionistas are excellent at saying exactly what they mean without being so overt as to get them into trouble, like when Anna Wintour called Sarah Jessica Parker “coltish” she meant “that woman looks like a horse.” Here’s our special gloss-ary for fashion week so you don’t miss any subtext about the models, clothes, designers or Wintours-in-training. Topic: Fashion Vocabulary
The New York Times did a profile of everybody’s favorite high fashion clotheshorse Daphne Guinness over the break and (seemingly) coined such a striking term that we had to investigate further:
Fashion can be a terrifying industry. When I first started attending fashion events in New York, I felt like no matter what I did it would be painfully obvious that I was a country bumpkin with bad style. Now that I’ve had some practice going to fashion events, I’ve picked up a couple of pointers that will work for anyone trying to fit in, no matter where you’re from or who you (don’t) know. More

What the hell is “greige”? Is it a chic form of grunge (like that ill-fated Marc Jacobs show that was full of flannel)? Perhaps a rare fish? No, it’s a word that Elle Canada just invented to try and describe the very odd union of the colors gray (or, in their Northern parlance, “grey”) and beige. That said, they didn’t have an example of exactly what “greige” looks like, so we might have to put this particular neologism back in the closet for now. More

First, there were leggings. And when those weren’t bad enough, there were jeggings. Once my mom had heard of jeggings, I thought they’d go away. But instead they spun off into “treggings” – trouser leggings, so sayeth H&M in their new billboards. The leggings are made in stretch fabrics that are supposed to resemble corduroy, leather, wool, and the like. Since the ones in this particular ad are light brown, I was sort of hoping they’d be “tree leggings” because you’re supposed to look like a stick when you wear them. No such luck. More
A gorgeous look for fall is eye makeup in a mix of food-named neutral tones like caramel and toffee. If mixed properly, the effect is simple yet beautiful. However, someone gave this nice eye look a really, really dumb name, and that dumb name is “cashmink.” More
