Last week, we met Casey Legler, a striking female artist working as a male model (she’s even on the men’s board at Ford). We were so very excited to encounter a female trailblazer of this sort, after a few seasons dominated by Andrej Pejic. You know what sounds like a good idea for a striking, funny, provocative fashion editorial? Imagine a beautiful model… wearing outlandish couture, flowing caftans, immaculately tailored sheath dresses… while buying groceries in a supermarket. Yes, a regular old, garden-variety supermarket. The most mundane of environs. Wouldn’t that be camp? And tongue-in-cheek? In fact, the whole idea of juxtaposing couture opulence with menial tasks is just so rich!

Terry Richardson does one thing now: he feeds simple carbohydrates to spectacular-looking women in designer clothes under harsh lights. That’s his shtick. His latest subject is Lindsey Wixson, who he shot with greasy french fries and ketchup for Purple‘s Fall 2011 issue. Richardson previously shot Wixson with a mountain of repulsive-looking spaghetti for Vogue Nippon. Oh, and he photographed Crystal Renn eating spaghetti in a disgusting manner for French Vogue. …And Natasha Poly horking cupcakes and chicken wings for French Vogue, too. I’ll admit it, I didn’t believe it was Sasha P at first. The Russian “doll-faced” mannequin–one of the few working who could reasonably be called a supermodel–looks more ’80s Madonna mashed with bodacious modern-day bombshell (Amanda Seyfried?) than her usual lanky self. Mert & Marcus shot Sasha in Versace for the October cover of Vogue Paris and yes, even though she’s been highly visible since opening Prada in 2005, this somehow manages to be her first. More »
