There were friends, fun, pizza, cake, post punk, ’90s goth kid music, booty rap, laser lights, space helmets, and a good bit of debauchery. As much as I like to make fun of Audrey from Girls for being a huge fashion victim with her camo-print rompers and culturally insensitive headbands, I believe there’s a right way to wear this un-killable trend. Why, I’ve even been known to rock a floral headband myself. I’m also a fan of that witchy, lacey, Steve Nicks look, which is good, because it doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. Considering these two facts, then, it’s no surprise I approve of this ethereal photo spread in the March issue of Vogue Russia, which does the late winter/early spring nature sprite thing quite well. Everyone’s favorite TV Medea mom is featured prominently in the spring/summer issue of Vs Magazine, and she looks pretty different from how we’re used to seeing her. Apparently, someone in the art department decided it was a good idea to do the ol’ “playing against type” trick on her with a bunch of black eyeliner and what looks like some temporary black hair dye. And you know what? It totally was. Maybe it’s just my gothic sensibilities showing through, but I tend to think a little darkness and gloom make almost any conventionally attractive blonde about twenty times hotter. On a recent trip to Finland in search of purer, colder, more folklore-rich Chanel than the boring old Chanel you can buy in New York, Lady Gaga encountered a shop girl who made the unfortunate mistake of looking her in the eye. So untutored was she in the ways of American celebrity that she not only gazed into the Queen of pop’s forbidden face, but failed to smear her own with mud and soot so as not to risk appearing more beautiful than the Queen. The Queen was silent for a long time, then whirled around and exited the shop, only to return under cover of night to put a curse on the impudent Chanel store. Sartorial genius and Anna Wintour pal Nicki Minaj dropped a video for her new single “I Am Your Leader” today, and it’s no less eye popping than we’ve come to expect from her, with the added bonus that it’s actually a good song. (Please stick to rapping, Nicki!) I love the colorful Tim Burton-esque backdrop, and it goes along perfectly with the whole “cute/kooky/scary” image she’s built for herself. She doesn’t wear that many different outfits in it, relatively speaking, but the ones she does wear are pretty memorable.
