It’s couture week and so far the big news of Spring 2012 is that Bill Gayten‘s collection for Christian Dior was better than his first. The other news? Karl Lagerfeld presented his Chanel couture collection on a runway that looked like the inside of a plane. …Which makes sense because everyone loves planes, right? Anyway, there was some star power in the front row: Cameron Diaz, Diane Kruger, Eizabeth Olsen, Vanessa Paradis‘ first appearance since her split from Johnny Depp and, of course, fashion’s Darth Vader himself, Karl Lagerfeld. Someone let Madonna have another movie! It’s called W.E. and it’s about Prince Edward and the woman for whom he abdicated the throne, Wallis Simpson. There’s also a parallel story in the ’90s featuring Abbie Cornish. So it’s like Julie and Julia, but with Nazi sympathizers. Anyway, we mention because the film will have an al-couture wardrobe and the clothes look pretty breathtaking. More

This past weekend, I took a trip up to Quebec for “The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk,” a sprawling exhibition in honor of Jean Paul Gaultier’s 30+ years of enfant terrible-ness at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. The exhibit will run for one more month and boasts about 120 couture and ready-to-wear pieces. My thoughts on the show are here, while this is a gallery of the looks and details I liked best. More

You look at enough couture shows and you often think, “Wow, that dress costs a ton of money because it actually required 100 hours of hand beading in a little atelier somewhere” or “That suit is made of ostrich skin, that is a very expensive material.” …But then you come across something like Dutch designer Iris van Herpen’s Fall 2011 couture collection and you think, “This person actually sees the world a different way.” And it’s awesome.
