There were a lot of trends on view at NYFW this past week: from obvious Spring choices like pastel colors and bright citrus shades to (possibly unrealistic?) all white ensembles and graphic handbags (along with much maligned trends we’d love to see go away forever like peplums and crop tops).
But the trend that landed on nearly every runway?
Can you guess? More
While the Spring 2014 collections have been a little same-y, they’ve brought a lot of fun, eye-catching, wearable accessories. See, for example, our roundup of the many delightful shoes.
Now, of course, it’s time for handbags. Graphic black and white was the reason for the season at NYFW–a huge portion of the bags we saw played with contrasting stripes, geometric details and houndstooth. Let’s take a closer look… More
Fashion Week has but two days left! We’ve seen a lot of the expected for Spring 2014–bright citrus colors, florals, white looks, unfortunate crop tops and more unfortunate peplums–and a little of the refreshing (trapeze tops! swing coats!). But, thankfully, anchoring so many of Spring collections are a whole lot of wonderful, colorful, wearable shoes.
And when we say wearable, we (mostly) mean it–designers are all about chunky sandals, flatforms and sweet boots for Spring. Here’s a smattering of some lovely shoes from NYFW… More
Another year of crop tops…? More
We know that designers often imagine a specific kind of woman for each collection–but who is the woman that wears head-to-toe white? And, judging by the amount of solid white columns on the runways, they must think she’s out there in droves.
Let’s have a look at the permanent Spring trend–and, as fresh and alluring as many appear, just keep in mind the coffee stains… More
Celebrities love fashion week. Not just because they get wined and dined, sit front row, skip all the lines and leave loaded down with freebies–but because they get press, for the simple act of wearing clothes. Their outfits don’t have to be inventive, interesting or even stylish–if they’re famous and anywhere within a stone’s throw of Linc Center or Milk, they’ll get photographed. For dayz.
And we’ll contribute to the problem! More
We are firm believers in never paying full price for anything. While it can be tempting to purchase current season stuff while it’s new and hot (and, well, practical weather-wise), we’d much rather wait until late summer/early Winter for crazy discounts on slightly older stock. Since everyone and their mother’s having a sale right now, we figured we’d round up a few current gems for you. Ahead, you’ll find all kinds of good summery stuff–dresses, tops, pants, accessories–and all of them under $150, including Rebecca Taylor, Helmut Lang, J Brand, A.P.C., Opening Ceremony and more. Michelle Obama is no stranger to killing it, fashion-wise. More
Spring is reliably the time for two things: floral prints and airy dresses in white. True to form, NYFW saw no shortage of prints–of every kind–and plenty of the LWD (the LBD’s humidity-friendlier cousin). Here’s the 10 on our wishlist, from Gatsby dreams at Ralph Lauren to draping at Doo.Ri to minimalism at Helmut Lang… and this razor sharp number above from Cushnie et Ochs. More
Okay, I recognize we’re in the middle of a brutal heat wave, but… summer knits are awesome! First off, they’re excellent toppers for sundresses on breezy summer evenings. Second, they are indispensable transitional pieces. Oh, also: stores are currently flooded with them (example). So, even if adding another layer is the last thing on your mind, now’s the time to stow away. Here are some good options. More
We were really struggling to come up with a great 4th of July-inspired Friday Style Icon: there were obvious options (various first ladies, Wonder Woman), there were ridiculous options (Jessica Simpson in Major Movie Star), and then the solution occurred to me during my afternoon viewing of the Top Gun volleyball scene (I watch it thrice daily): Charlotte “Charlie” Blackwood. The tough astrophysicist is inexplicably immune to rowdy acapella versions of Righteous Brothers songs but ultimately has a weakness for short, recalcitrant pilots (who are dangerous). Anyway, happy 4th of July and here’s our salute to Charlie, with all her back-seam stockings and retro pencil skirts. More
It’s pretty hot out but that’s no excuse to dress like a slob (especially if you’re doing sweet romance shit). Here are some outfit ideas for warm weather dates that we’re currently really into. More
It’s that time of year: to retire the LBD and break out the LWD. It’s especially fitting this season, where white is all over the place. Some good choices, ahead. More
Even since Vogue landed on blogging platform tumblr (preferred service of upwardly mobile and liberal arts-educated bloggers everywhere), less cutting edge fashion types went scrambling to get their own. In some cases, tumblrs are just satellite blogs for the main event; in others, they are awesome free-standing entities that you really should pay attention to. Here’s a mix of the obvious (Helmut Lang, V) and the less so. More
