10 Of Our Favorite Female Empowering Hip Hop Artists

10 Of Our Favorite Female Empowering Hip Hop Artists

This post is brought to you by our friends at Gurl.

Hip hop gets a bad rep. Look, while I’m the first person to say that it’s possible to like things that are problematic, I’ll also be the first person to call out any hip hop artists who are sexisthomophobic jerks with lyrics to match. But people act as if hip hop is the only medium in which that kind of behavior can fly. Nobody is calling out metal music for its violent lyrics about women, are they? Not really. And when I look back on some of the pop punk songs I used to love in my early teens, I can’t help but cringe at how sexist and slut shaming so many of the lyrics were. I shouldn’t even start to go into the number of indie rock artists out there who have been accused of committing actual abuse in real life. More »

Gallery: Rye Rye Rocks Prabal Garung In Her Latest Video

It looks like M.I.A. protege Rye Rye is following in her mentor’s footsteps in more ways than one. In addition to making some incredibly catchy hip-hop, she’s also become something of a designer clothes horse, and with none of the problematic contradictions that come along with M.I.A.’s radical politics. Rye Rye and her crew of backup dancers just wanna have fun!

It’s no surprise, then, that designer Prabal Gurung wanted to collaborate with the Baltimore MC on the video for her single “New Thing.” “It was just so fantabulous,” Rye told Spinner. “I never really wear things like that, so it made me feel so on top of the world — sexy but cool because I was still dancing in the heels!” Indeed. All the outfits in the video are taken from Prabal Gurung’s 2012 resort-wear collection. Check it out. More »

Bullish: Three Career F*ckups I Made So You Don’t Have To

Bullish: Three Career F*ckups I Made So You Donât Have To

Some people are successful just because they’re lucky. Some people are successful due to such a confluence of luck and aptitude that it’s impossible to sort out: Ivanka Trump sounds like a pretty cool lady, but it’s impossible for anyone to know if she would’ve done well if not born a Trump.

While I certainly feel privileged to have been born in a nation with good public schools, impeccable sanitation, and lack of Sharia law, I do like to point out that most of what I talk about in Bullish was learned by me in extremely painful ways: I have declared bankruptcy, I have lived in an East Harlem drug den, I have been an awkward sixteen-year-old who had never shaken hands before.

It’s “I Regret Everything” week here at TheGloss! So, here are some ginormous mistakes I’ve made that you don’t have to!

If You Like Hip Hop You Are Probably a Cheating Bastard

According to the website IllicitEncounters.com, which is basically the UK version of adultery website AshleyMadison.com, the people who are most likely to sign up for their website are people who list hip hop as their favorite kind of music. “Those who decide to turn their fantasies into reality generally have a more open-minded and strident attitude to their sexuality,” said Sara Hartley, who is a representative for the website.
