Lady Gaga has finally released the music video for her latest single, “Applause,” directed by fashion photography powerhouse Inez & Vinoodh. Since the singer is currently preoccupied with a supposed “exchange” between arts and pop culture (as if one would somehow make the other better?), the video is predictably… arty.
It’s also kind of incoherent–a pastiche of performance, dance sequences and costumes for costumes’ sakes. But since Gaga is some kind of Russian nesting doll of pure expression and radio-friendly hooks–”art’s in pop culture in me”–we know that even her seemingly random fashion and beauty decisions have artistic value.
Using our two and a half semesters of art history class at the junior college, we’re here to guide you through some of the video’s most noteworthy looks. More

Remember Lady Gaga’s “You* and I” video? Apparently Gaga collaborated on some supplementary material with fashion greats Inez & Vinoodh and will release a “short film” starring each of her characters from the original video. This is the video about Yuyi, so now you can watch Gaga as a chainsmoking mermaid sit in a director’s chair and wail “Nebraska” repeatedly, if that was a hole in your heart before. More
Remember when we mentioned Riccardo Tisci’s really expensive issue of Visionaire? Well, it’s out. And thankfully it’s hardcover (I don’t know if I’m joking). It’s also very, very NSFW. The issue is described as Tisci’s “meditation on the theme of religion” and explores the subject as “a synonym for obsession, ritual, worship, apparition and the celebration of humanity.” PROVIDED YOU ARE NOT AT WORK (or have a really cool job), check out Lara Stone, Marina Abramovic, and Arizona Muse and more photographed by majors like Inez & Vinoodh, Mert & Marcus and Mario Testino.
