Fashion week makes me think a lot about models. More
Lilit dropped an excellent gallery today, of actresses we’d like to ban from magazine covers. But scrolling through and seeing images of Harper’s, Vogue and Elle, I couldn’t help but be reminded of an even more fundamental annoyance than Lauren Conrad on the cover of anything: why aren’t models on the cover of fashion magazines? On Friday, Jessica Pauline Ogilvie filed a brief on the sometimes disturbingly hyper-sexual–or at least misleadingly sexually sophisticated–representation of teenage girls in the fashion world. She chose a photo of high schooler Lindsey Wixson pulling down a pair of Wayfarers in standard Lolita-allusion. She could have just as easily linked to this video of Wixson in a revealing cut-out Versace gown, while Donatella herself looks on and coos over Wixson’s “sexy” and “gorgeous” look. More
