The modeling industry is one place where women completely dominate. Sure, that’s hugely problematic if you’re looking for anything positive from a women’s rights perspective but, for better or for worse, women completely dominate when it comes to getting paid for how they look. Or, as Forbes recently put it in their Top Earning Male Models list, ”[it's] a career that is neither easy nor lucrative for men.” More
As Fashion Month draws to a close, we must pick up the pieces and filter out the relevant information. So far, we know the Spring 2014 collections were all very Spring-y, the front rows were all very famous, and the models were all very white.
But! There were still surprises to be found in New York, London, Paris and Milan, as the accessories stole the show time and time again. Here’s 25 gorgeous, striking and occasionally very wacky bags from Fashion Month, featuring Oscar de la Renta, Victoria Beckham, rag & bone, Christian Dior, Viktor + Rolf, Lanvin and more!
Although it’s exceptionally weird that Terry Richardson photographed Oprah, what’s even more offputting is that the subject of a Terry Richardson photograph isn’t spread-eagled and wearing ass shorts. If it weren’t for his signature harsh lighting and oppressive banality, you’d never know. More
It’s the moment* we’ve all been waiting for: Raf Simons‘ debut haute couture collection for Christian Dior walked in Paris yesterday. On a set covered from floor to ceiling with beautiful flowers, Raf sent out a collection of deceptively minimal femininity molded into the house of Dior’s iconic silhouettes. More
Though they could set the price a lot higher. More
After what feels like an endless series of speculations, rumors, and shake-ups (as well as some high-profile goose chases and a few poorly-received collections by interim designer Bill Gaytten), Christian Dior has finally announced who will follow disgraced former creative director John Galliano. So we were outside TheGloss‘ Manhattan office last week and spotted a girl in Dr Martens (which we actively look for, apparently, because we’re still a friendless goth teenager). Upon looking a little closer, we realized they were actually a Dr Martens’ version of chelsea boots, which we had never seen and found kind of surprising. The short, suctioned ankle boot was a staple of the mod scene and enjoys a resurgence about every ten years–also! when spray-painted glossy white, they’re the unofficial shoe of the Stormtroopers in Star Wars–so we decided now would be a good time to go looking for a pair. While window shopping over the weekend, we then noticed approximately 60,000* other girls wearing Chelsea boots. …Which means we have an exploding trend on our hands. Moreover, an “It” shoe that’s walkable and practical is about the only kind we can get behind. So, without further ado… More
The plot keeps thickening: maybe Raf Simons didn’t step down from Jil Sander with his eyes on the top spot at Christian Dior (or Yves Saint Laurent!) as we previously thought. WWD’s Bridget Foley says Simons was actually fired from … More
After almost seven years of enormous achievement, the great Raf Simons is leaving the house of Jil Sander. More
We make fun of American fashion glossies a lot because their covers are boring. For one recent example, Harper’s Bazaar shed its own tedious cover format and then did a bunch of press congratulating itself for the new French Vogue-y direction. The March 2012 issue of W, however, gets both a supermodel (as opposed to an actress) and quite an arresting portrait to boot.
2011 saw its fair share of over-exposed prints (stripes!), It Dresses (Dolce & Gabbana‘s stars, Gucci‘s swirling disco gowns, looks from Prada‘s Spring and Fall collections), and poor decision making (feather earrings, mullet dresses). Here, we’ve rounded up the biggest, most inescapable fashion trends of the year, for your reminiscing pleasure. More
On Sunday, the fashion press did one big Coke Zero spittake when news of Raf Simons moving to YSL spread across Twitter. The story traced back to International Herald Tribune online style editor Jessica Michault, who had tweeted, ”Suzy Menkes breaks the news that Raf Simons is slated to take over the helm at Yves Saint Laurent,”effectively also breaking the news that Stefano Pilati was leaving YSL. BUT… More
