This week, Belarussian blonde Tanya Dziahileva moved agencies to Marilyn in Paris and her new show card reads “Dyagileva.” Not such a change (and still as difficult for us native English speakers to say) but it got us thinking: so many models come from far-off places where surnames have many consonants… while other models just had plain Jane names that needed some punching up. I’m a fan of Chanel. But with respect to Karl Lagerfeld’s Chanel couture collection which showed today, I am not a fan. The looks were dizzying in their incoherence: spider veins coming down jackets transitioned into sequined trousers, which in turn transitioned into 80′s proportions and skirt after skirt worn over pant after pant. It’s quite possible I just missed the point Mr. Lagerfeld was trying to make, but it’s also quite possible he tried to make way too many and lost his focus. More »

Sasha Pivovarova was practically synonymous with Prada. Every season for three years, she headlined the campaigns, with her delicate, alien features and impossible litheness.  Now she has returned, in a manner of speaking: she’s a Spring 2011 face of Miu Miu.
