Models of the Decade: Carmen Kass

Models of the Decade: Carmen Kass

Carmen Kass grew up in Paide (population: less than 10,000), Estonia and she didn’t finish high school. At age eighteen, she traveled to Paris to pursue modeling and became one of the biggest supermodels on the planet. She dominated the first half of the decade with every major campaign you can name: Chanel, Fendi, Gucci, Givenchy, Chloe. Her long, gazelle-like limbs and delicate features are practically synonymous with J’Adore. Although she’s slowed her pace since, she’s still the muse to Michael Kors (and star of every campaign), she did Celine in 2010, and (bonus!) became  president of the Estonian National Chess League. She is one of Mario Testino’s absolute favorites. And one of ours, too. More »

Models of the Decade: Agyness Deyn

The fish and chip shop girl from Manchester made her runway debut in 2006 and soared to stardom, going on to be one of the biggest mannequins in the world and face of Armani, Hugo Boss, Mulberry, Vivienne Westwood and Anna Sui. After a year or two of seeing her on every billboard, catwalk and campaign, Agyness suffered from overexposure, but it’s not her fault everybody wanted a piece of her… she’s a darling of Steven Meisel, has been muse to Burberry’s Christopher Baily and Henry Holland, and is known across the land for her eclectic style, tough-pretty features and ever-changing pixie cut. Whether or not we got sick of Agyness, she’s one of the most significant, ubiquitous faces of recent memory years. More »

Models of the Decade: Gemma Ward

One of the most sensational models that ever was: Gemma Ward floated onto the catwalks in 2003 (as a Prada exclusive, no less) and changed the game. She was followed by an endless stream of babydoll-faced models like Vlada Roslyakova, Heather Marks, Lily Cole, and Lisa Cant, all with wideset eyes, narrow jaws and tip-tilt pouts. None of them had quite the alien beauty and ethereal poise of Gemma, who went on to be the face of Prada, Dolce & Gabbana, YSL, Valentino, Louis Vuitton… She quit modeling in 2009 (though she’s rumored to return) after dominating the decade and making a permanent mark on fashion. Models of the Decade: Daria Werbowy

Models of the Decade: Daria Werbowy

Bred in the Ukraine, born in Krakow and raised in Ontario, Daria Werbowy is the girl with the golden measurements (standing 5’11” at 34-24-34) and the unforgettable face. She rocketed to fame with Prada’s 2003 campaign, going on to land every blue chip campaign available: Dior, YSL, Chanel, Versace, Missoni, etc. If Natalia Vodianova is this generation’s Christy Turlington, then Daria is Linda Evangelista: familiar but exotic, unconventional, striking, almost fascinatingly beautiful, with a face you could look at for hours. Models of the Decade: Natalia Vodianova

The Russian-born supe with the wide eyes and big heart burst out of the gate in early-2000 and didn’t take long to land every major catwalk, bluechip campaign and magazine cover under the sun. Tom Ford even called her the “most beautiful girl in the world.” There’s nothing to say about this real-life Cinderella that hasn’t been said already, so let’s appreciate her iconic face with a gallery.
