Bea Arthur was a pretty cool lady. She played one of TV’s first feminist characters on All In The Family, and of course, she captured our hearts as Dorothy Zbornak on Golden Girls. She was also pretty foxy. Hence, it stands to reason that when an iconic painting of not only Bea Arthur, but Bea Arthur topless goes up for auction, the bidding war would be high stakes and fierce. Dovima With Peals, Richard Avedon.

I really like this picture, but it also makes me a bit sad. Dovima is my favorite model – mostly because she loved comic books, science fiction and was generally kind of a nerdy oddball. She was one of those people who seemingly had a glorious youth only to have an obscure end (she ended up working as a restaurant hostess). Of course, she might have been quite happy doing that. But still. Surely it must have been a bit difficult to go from capering in a ballgown among the elephants to telling people it was going to be a twenty minute wait. In this picture you can see the moles and crows feet and it’s clear that she’s no longer at the height of her beauty – but the expression on her face is still so priceless that you can see why Avedon would always consider her the greatest aristocratic beauty of her day.

Three Things I Learned About Age This Christmas

Let me get this out of the way: I’m 31. Well into my 30′s. Out of my 20′s.

The transition from one decade to the next has been both wonderful and challenging, but for the most part, being in my 30′s is a welcome change — I love that I’m so much more comfortable in my own skin, and that I’ve pretty much stopped caring about whether or not anyone thinks I’m cool (I am.
