Gallery: Male Models Re-enact Their Childhood Photos For VMAN

Gallery: Male Models Re-enact Their Childhood Photos For VMAN

For the latest issue of VMAN, photographer Irina Werning got various male models to re-enact photos from their childhoods. Scanning through the photos, I’m struck by several things. First, the clothes and hairstyles that trendy young people are wearing today are often not so different than what they wore as children in the 80′s. Surprise. Second, the poses read as feminine in a lot of the pictures, because we’re so used to seeing female models pictured in a childlike way. Why do these pictures come off as playful and funny, while with female models, it might come off incredibly creepy? Because the fashion industry has a Lolita fetish that only applies to women, is why. I’d be surprised if Werning did not intend to comment on these issues. More »

Italian Vogue‘s Mechanical Dolls Is The Creepiest Fashion Spread We’ve Seen In A While

Italian Vogue's Mechanical Dolls Is The Creepiest Fashion Spread We've Seen In A While

Here at TheGloss, we firmly believe that Italian Vogue is the best Vogue. That’s do in larger part to the joint vision of EIC Franca Sozzani and fashion’s great lensman Steven Meisel. However, every now and again, Italian Vogue is especially awesome by virtue of publishing editorials that would be completely unfathomable in American Vogue (for what it’s worth, French Vogue might do something similar, but there’d be way more exposed breasts and cigarettes). Anyway, this month Tim Walker turns in Mechnical Dolls, starring Kirsi Pyrhonen & Audrey Marnay as wind-up dolls with superfluous limbs and lots of other off-putting features! It’s eerie and unsettling and oddly pretty. More »

Haute Doppelgangers: Abbey Lee Kershaw Channels Twiggy In i-D

Everybody loves it when models dress in costume, whether it’s as industry titans like Karl Lagerfeld, editors, pop stars, politicians or even just other models. In the latest editorial to land online from i-D‘s fall 2011 issue, Australian Abbey Lee Kershaw dons some seriously mod looks by Prada, YSL and more in tribute to the skinny model OG: England’s pixie of one thousand eye lashes, Twiggy. Lady Gaga Is A Chainsmoking Mermaid In Artsy Video By Inez & Vinoodh

Lady Gaga Is A Chainsmoking Mermaid In Artsy Video By Inez & Vinoodh

Remember Lady Gaga’s “You* and I” video? Apparently Gaga collaborated on some supplementary material with fashion greats Inez & Vinoodh and will release a “short film” starring each of her characters from the original video. This is the video about Yuyi, so now you can watch Gaga as a chainsmoking mermaid sit in a director’s chair and wail “Nebraska” repeatedly, if that was a hole in your heart before. More »

Supermodel Sasha Pivovarova Plays A Bombshell On Her First French Vogue Cover

Supermodel Sasha Pivovarova Plays A Bombshell On Her First French Vogue Cover

I’ll admit it, I didn’t believe it was Sasha P at first. The Russian “doll-faced” mannequin–one of the few working who could reasonably be called a supermodel–looks more ’80s Madonna mashed with bodacious modern-day bombshell (Amanda Seyfried?) than her usual lanky self. Mert & Marcus shot Sasha in Versace for the October cover of Vogue Paris and yes, even though she’s been highly visible since opening Prada in 2005, this somehow manages to be her first. More »

Justin Timberlake Plays A Cheating Politician In W, Amanda Seyfried Plays His Wife/Mistress

W‘s October cover features Justin Timberlake as a philandering politician and Amanda Seyfreid as his long-suffering wife (and, bonus: mistress). Seyfried wears first lady favorites like Carolina Herrera and St John while Timberlake continues to stall his followup to FutureSex/LoveSounds and that bums everyone out. They were shot by Michael Thompson and styled by Edward Enninful. Here’s the full spread. More »

Gallery: Drew Barrymore Looks Fantastic For Neiman Marcus' Art of Fashion Campaign

I’m pretty sure everytime I see Drew Barrymore I think she looks better than ever before. Since I have a soft spot for the actress–one of my childhood style icons–I had to post these ridiculously glamorous images from her campaign for Neiman Marcus’ Art of Fashion. Norman Jean Roy snapped Barrymore in looks from Prada, Valentino, Gucci and Armani. How amazing does she look? More »
