Why Are Plus-Size Models Always Forced To Pose Naked?

Why Are Plus-Size Models Always Forced To Pose Naked?

It remains that plus models, used less in general and usually as a “special” feature, are featured in less clothing most of the time. Certainly, part of modeling is to look good naked; your body is your job. But in America, if they make an exception for plus, it seems they make an exception for nudity as well. Is the editor going for shock value, genuinely wanting to celebrate a full-figured beauty, or are there simply logistic issues in clothing the models when mainstream samples sized 2-4 are too small? What’s going on with all the curvy ladies going nude? More »

Plus Size Top Models Crystal Renn & Kate Dillon Are Co-Starring In The Fall Marina Rinaldi Campaign

Plus Size Top Models Crystal Renn & Kate Dillon Are Co-Starring In The Fall Marina Rinaldi Campaign

Two straight size models who went plus to massive success–Crystal Renn and Kate Dillon–have landed plus brand Marina Rinaldi’s fall campaign, lensed by Alexi Lubomirski. Italian Vogue hails Renn as a “symbol of the curvy revolution” in its coverage and mentions the controversy surrounding her “alleged” weight loss, which we think is a misuse of the word “alleged.” However, much as people like to harp on Renn for no longer really resembling the full-figured women she’s meant to represent, the fact remains that Crystal Renn does not look like a lot of her model counterparts and we’re always happy to see her. Check out Renn and Dillon (a new mom, no less) looking supremely tall and beautiful in the gallery ahead. More »

What’s the first thing you notice about model Robyn Lawley? I’d venture to guess it’s how utterly gorgeous she is. That’s probably why Vogue Australia decided to feature her in their first ever plus-size editorial. You may also remember her from the cover of Vogue Italia. While that shoot was undeniably hot, it’s nice to see a mainstream fashion magazine let a plus size model wear clothes for once. I’m even willing to forgive editor-in-chief Kristie Clements’ skinny-as-go-to-compliment statement that “she doesn’t actually look plus size to me at all now.” It’s okay to think plus-size women are hot, Kristie! But it seems like she’s at least on the right track, so I’ll let it slide. More »

So everyone’s favorite tampon tea enthusiast shot some photos once again for Vice’s annual photo issue (which just hit the Internet), and perhaps to counter accusations that he’s only into skinny white women, this time he decided to shoot plus-sized, mostly non-white women in his trademark lecherous style as if to say, “don’t worry, bigger girls, I will totally creep on you, too!” Although I will admit to a certain critical bias here, there are actually some things I like about the photos, as well as some things I really, really dislike. Let’s take a look. More »

Editorials: Crystal Renn Takes A Retro Turn In Spanish Vogue

Since plus-size models are in the news today, it seems like a good time to turn our attention toward Crystal Renn’s solo editorial in July’s Vogue Spain. Mark Seliger lensed Renn wearing looks from Gucci, L’Wren Scott, Prabal Gurung and more styled by Arianne Phillips. It may not be her most compelling work but if you love Crystal as much as we do, it’s worth a look. More »

Gallery: Eight Gorgeous Plus-Size Models

In a comment on my post about her magazine yesterday, Beautiful editor Sue Thomason said that she only uses models above a U.K. size 12 to “redress the balance.” In other words, since you only see skinny models in most magazines, it’s important to show an equal number of larger models in hers. This makes a certain kind of sense. I’m not saying we should live in some communist utopia where everyone gets to be a model who wants to be one, but we need to expand our concept of beauty from where it is now. It’s with this in mind that I’ve made a gallery of eight beautiful plus-size models. More »
