Let’s Take A Moment To Appreciate Rodarte’s Amazing Vincent Van Gogh Dresses

Let's Take A Moment To Appreciate Rodarte's Amazing Vincent Van Gogh Dresses

NYFW still has some time left but it’s safe to say that one of the week’s most beloved shows belonged to Rodarte: though it touched on a few of the major trends for Spring 2012–peplums, cutouts–the collection was startlingly unique in a season of bold primary colors and clean monochrome. The Mulleavy sisters were inspired by the masterpieces of Vincent van Gogh and sent hatchmarks, sunflowers and swirling sky prints down the runway. More »

Friday Style Icon: The Inimitable Shala Monroque

Friday Style Icon: The Inimitable Shala Monroque

There’s a whole slew of terribly stylish women we may have never discovered if it wasn’t for the advent of street style blogs. While Elle‘s Kate Lanphear is beloved for her structured rock’n roll aesthetic and Vogue Nippon’s Anna Dello Russo is known for wearing head-to-toe couture hallucinations, former Pop editor-at-large and fellow street style (/fellow blogger) darling Shala Monroque has a downright uncanny way with color. Monroque fearlessly mixes head-turning prints, bright statement necklaces, and ladylike silhouettes for a fresh, modern look that’s completely her own. She also has killer legs. Here’s a few of her best looks.

Designers Like Karl Lagerfeld & Donatella Versace Pose With Their Musical Muses

W Magazine did a story on the relationship between designers and their musical muses. With some, the connection is obvious: Florence Welch was recently named the face of Gucci so she’s a natural fit to inspire Gucci creative director Frida Giannini. With others, it’s more unclear (what about flower child Esperanza Spalding inspires minimalist Francisco Costa?*). Check out the pairings in the gallery. Also: poor Baptise Giabiconi!! More »

Friday Style Icon: Tilda Swinton’s Greatest Red Carpet Looks

Friday Style Icon: Tilda Swinton's Greatest Red Carpet Looks

I should really title this “some of Tilda Swinton’s Greatest Red Carpet Looks” because there’s only 15 slides here and in my opinion few women come anywhere near her fashion prowess. While most actresses rely heavily on romantic, pretty dresses by Marchesa or Elie Saab, Swinton’s fallbacks are Haider Ackermann, Jil Sander and Lanvin. She may get blasted by idiotic red carpet correspondents (who themselves dress like overgrown princesses suffocating under 4 lbs. of makeup), but it doesn’t matter at all: the only thing Swinton has more of than style is… talent. Let’s spend a few minutes appreciating this original. More »

Video: Chloe Sevigny’s Impersonator Loves Spring For Rodarte, Persimmons

Video: Chloe Sevigny's Impersonator Loves Spring For Rodarte, Persimmons

Thanks to appreciators of last week’s Friday Style Icon, the latest video of Chloe Sevigny’s impersonator Drew Droege ended up many times over in my inbox: the half ridiculous, half weirdly astute mimic has filed a video on what Ms. Sevigny loves about Spring: “Spring cleaning… lady.” “Rusted razor belts” from the Rodarte collection. “The return of the persimmon.” “[Curling] up with Camus.” Look out for some heinous rompers and that great over-emphasized speech pattern*. We’re over-WUH-HELM-ed by it. More »

Friday Style Icon: Chloe Sevigny

Friday Style Icon: Chloe Sevigny

I’m a fan of Chloe Sevigny. Or Chloë Sevigny as people with any keyboard proficiency like to call her. I think she has genuine style. And she was in Last Days of Disco, which ruled. Though I agree with her detractors that not every risk she takes pays off, she’s still always 90% more interesting than every other actress on a red carpet anywhere. Also, I’m hungover today and couldn’t come up with some kitschy ’90s show or guilty pleasure movie to mine for ideas. So here’s a bunch of great Chloe Sevigny style decisions and a bunch of things that resemble them. More »

12 Striking Prints To Jolt Your Wardrobe... All Under $200

If there’s one major trend we saw on the Fall 2011 runways at NYFW, it was… prints. By which we mean prints on everything. Abstract prints, geometric prints, criss-crossing lines, bright and graphic prints splashed across skirts, sweaters, dresses and especially pants (but we’ll get to that). In the interim, we scoured the internet for printed pieces with a touch of what we saw on the catwalk. As always, we tried to keep the pricepoints as accessible as we’re able. More »
