I know that Lady Gaga’s neverending goal is to garner press for her outrageous outfits and bold choices. But I’m not really sure how she thought that wearing a machine gun bra for her Friday night concert would be a good idea when we’re all still reeling from the Sandy Hook elementary school tragedy. In a year when mass shootings escalated to the point that they’re starting to feel commonplace, I don’t really think that there’s room in the national conversation for celebrities like Lady Gaga to make such a stupid shock ‘n awe costume decision. Not when there are people in this country who are already opposed to taking gun safety seriously. People who already look at machine guns as toys that they deserve to play with at their leisure — and not weapons capable of committing horrific crimes. More
As a young child, I was what people might call precocious. As a teenager, I was terrifying. More

Yes, I have always known about the bad, bad things our world holds around every corner and down every lane and across every hallway. There are awful things that happen all day, every year. But for some reason I can’t quite pinpoint, I can’t help but be so frighteningly aware of them that the prospect of having a child now upsets me. All I can imagine is crying. Just crying. More
How?
If anything, all I’ve heard as a result of the Newton, Conn. school shooting is people saying that we need 1) more conversations about gun control and 2) more conversations about mental health. But, apparently, there are also people saying “we should go buy a ton of guns.” More
While there is an infinite number of things to be depressed about when thinking of what happened at Sandy Hook Elementary School, one of the aspects that has shocked and appalled me the most is the way that many people have been callous, insensitive and just general jerks in their discussions of the topic. The Westboro Baptist Church will be picketing their funerals. Victoria Jackson blamed the tragedy on abortion. And now, some asshole has decided that in order to get his point across that he supports the Second Amendment, he should threaten to shoot up some schools himself. Oh, and cheer on the killer, Adam Lanza. More
It is rare that I take celebrities seriously. No, really, no matter how often I write about them, I just generally do not take famous people seriously. They’re like dolls: you hug them and tuck them in with you and pretend they have personalities, but inside, you’re pretty sure there’s no “soul,” whatever that means. And then sometimes, they say things that make you swing around, suddenly realizing that you’ve been flattering Chuckie every night. More
I, like millions of people, have found myself feeling devastated over what happened last week. It is impossibly hard to turn on the news, I can’t open the newspaper and I keep crying spontaneously. Nevertheless, sometimes that is both all right and appropriate; in the case of Sandy Hook, in fact, it makes complete sense. Sometimes, no matter how much we need to smile, it just isn’t quite time to do so yet, and Saturday’s episode introduction of Saturday Night Live reminded me that sometimes, we need to be sad and feel it fully. As you are certainly aware, Adam Lanza is the disturbed young man responsible for the Sandy Hook school shooting in Newton, Conn. A former babysitter claims that Lanza’s mother was aware of her son’s inclinations, and that she told the babysitter “to keep an eye on him at all times … to never turn my back, or even to go to the bathroom or anything like that.” Which makes a lot of us question whether, if she knew that her son was this disturbed, should she have taken more action? Should she have locked him up, or had him institutionalized? What was her duty as a parent, and as a member of society? More
