We’re pretty hard on Julianne Hough around here.
It seems like every time she shows up on a red carpet, she’s been talked into exactly whatever thing is the trendiest at the moment. It’s frustrating because it’s symptomatic of a larger problem with what passes for style in Hollywood: starlets with no sense of self coerced into looking like idiots by people who often care much more about career visibility than… the way someone’s actually dressed. A few days ago, we saw the first ad for the Alexander Wang Spring 2013 collection (above). It featured (the truly great, truly beautiful) Polish model Malgosia Bela and, strikingly, no clothing whatsoever. Why, we fashion bloggers wondered, would a fashion campaign feature no fashion? This was all starting to seem a little masturbatory for us, but then the rest of the campaign dropped and… it’s pretty great!
Steven Klein shot the set, in which Bela is styled (by Patti Wilson) like a futuristic warrior but also haunted cave woman? We don’t know. And, yes, there are clothes.
And maybe some nipple? More

Best dressed lists are silly. The reason they are silly is that 99.9% of all famous people have people called “stylists” whom they pay to pick out their clothes for them, to whom the credit really belongs. But nobody outside the fashion industry wants to buy a magazine featuring a “best stylist” list consisting of people they’ve never heard of, so we continue this charade of looking at pretty celebrities wearing pretty dresses and pretending they played any part in putting together those outfits themselves. More
